Matt Smith
Matt is a self-taught artist based in the North East of England specializing in wildlife portraiture commissions, illustrations and producing original and limited edition prints. He works predominantly with charcoal, carbon, chalk, graphite, water soluble pencils and acrylics and exhibits his work at the Love Art North East Arts Events and various markets and galleries in the North East of England. Matts signature style is to capture animals in intricate detail set against a stark white background to focus all the attention of the observer on the image.
Matt has a deep-seated love of nature and particularly dogs. He has never been without a dog and now have two black Labradors, Maggie and Coco who have often acted (or more accurately 'play-acted') as his art muses. Because of Matt's passion for wildlife, he understands the particular nuances that provide the individuality of the animals in our animal kingdom. He sees the simple lines and movements that betray the feeling beneath the skin; of the jaunty angle of the head; the languid arch of the outstretched leg, the solid set of the chest, the far away look or the glint in the eye.
